Comme il peut p\u00e9n\u00e9trer dans la peau, l&rsquo;inhalation et le contact cutan\u00e9 constituent tous deux des voies d&rsquo;exposition pertinentes.<br \/>\nCette substance est class\u00e9e, en vertu du r\u00e8glement CLP de l\u2019UE, comme substance pr\u00e9sum\u00e9e canc\u00e9rog\u00e8ne pour l\u2019homme (cat\u00e9gorie 1B). <\/p>\n<h2>O\u00f9 se situent les risques ?<\/h2>\n<p>L&rsquo;exposition professionnelle au pyrocat\u00e9chol se produit principalement dans les secteurs de la fabrication chimique et pharmaceutique, des essais et analyses techniques, ainsi que dans certaines industries en aval telles que le traitement de surface, l&rsquo;\u00e9lectronique, le caoutchouc et les plastiques, et la fabrication de machines.<br \/>\nLes professionnels les plus expos\u00e9s au risque d&rsquo;exposition au pyrocat\u00e9chol sont notamment les op\u00e9rateurs de proc\u00e9d\u00e9s chimiques, les op\u00e9rateurs de distillation, de m\u00e9lange et d&rsquo;op\u00e9rateurs de parcs de stockage, ainsi que les travailleurs de maintenance, les techniciens de laboratoire et les chimistes analystes. Les travailleurs des ateliers de galvanoplastie, ainsi que ceux impliqu\u00e9s dans le traitement de surface et la fabrication de composants \u00e9lectroniques, peuvent \u00e9galement y \u00eatre expos\u00e9s.<br \/>\nL\u2019exposition est particuli\u00e8rement probable lors d\u2019activit\u00e9s o\u00f9 la substance est manipul\u00e9e dans des syst\u00e8mes ouverts ou lorsque le confinement n\u2019est pas totalement efficace, comme lors de t\u00e2ches de m\u00e9lange ou d\u2019homog\u00e9n\u00e9isation, d\u2019immersion, de rev\u00eatement ou de traitement de surface. Une exposition suppl\u00e9mentaire peut survenir lors d\u2019op\u00e9rations d\u2019entretien et de nettoyage.  <\/p>\n<h2>En savoir plus sur la substance<\/h2>\n<p>Le pyrocat\u00e9chol est une substance solide \u00e0 temp\u00e9rature ambiante ; il se pr\u00e9sente g\u00e9n\u00e9ralement sous la forme d&rsquo;un solide cristallin de couleur blanche \u00e0 brune, susceptible de s&rsquo;assombrir au contact de l&rsquo;air. Le pyrocat\u00e9chol se dissout tr\u00e8s bien dans l&rsquo;eau et dans de nombreux solvants organiques. <\/p>\n<p>Le pyrocat\u00e9chol n&rsquo;est ni hautement inflammable ni explosif dans des conditions normales. Toutefois, il peut former de la poussi\u00e8re lorsqu&rsquo;il est manipul\u00e9 sous forme solide et peut g\u00e9n\u00e9rer des a\u00e9rosols ou des vapeurs lorsqu&rsquo;il est chauff\u00e9 dans le cadre de proc\u00e9d\u00e9s industriels ou lorsqu&rsquo;il est utilis\u00e9 sous forme liquide. <\/p>\n<p>Il est principalement utilis\u00e9 comme interm\u00e9diaire dans la fabrication d&rsquo;autres substances et produits. Les principales cat\u00e9gories de produits finis dans lesquelles le pyrocat\u00e9chol est utilis\u00e9 comprennent les produits agrochimiques (produits phytosanitaires), les ar\u00f4mes et les parfums (par exemple, la vanilline, les produits parfum\u00e9s \u00e0 usage domestique), les produits pharmaceutiques et les additifs pour le caoutchouc et les polym\u00e8res destin\u00e9s aux plastiques, aux pneumatiques et aux articles en caoutchouc. <\/p>\n<h2>Risques pour la sant\u00e9 pouvant survenir<\/h2>\n<p>L&rsquo;exposition au pyrocat\u00e9chol peut se produire par inhalation de poussi\u00e8res ou de vapeurs, ainsi que par contact cutan\u00e9.<br \/>\nUne exposition \u00e0 court terme peut entra\u00eener des sympt\u00f4mes tels que la toux, une irritation de la gorge, une irritation des yeux ainsi que des rougeurs ou une sensation d\u2019inconfort cutan\u00e9. Des expositions tr\u00e8s \u00e9lev\u00e9es (par exemple, en cas d\u2019ingestion) peuvent entra\u00eener des effets toxiques plus graves. Ce produit peut \u00e9galement provoquer des r\u00e9actions allergiques cutan\u00e9es apr\u00e8s une exposition r\u00e9p\u00e9t\u00e9e.<br \/>\nUne exposition \u00e0 long terme peut entra\u00eener des effets plus graves sur la sant\u00e9, notamment un risque accru de cancer, une d\u00e9pigmentation cutan\u00e9e, une dermatite chronique et des troubles respiratoires.  <\/p>\n<h2>Ce que vous pouvez faire<\/h2>\n<p>La substitution doit \u00eatre consid\u00e9r\u00e9e comme la priorit\u00e9. Dans la mesure du possible, le pyrocat\u00e9chol doit \u00eatre remplac\u00e9 par des substances moins dangereuses ou par des proc\u00e9d\u00e9s alternatifs permettant de r\u00e9duire l\u2019exposition. Les substituts possibles du pyrocat\u00e9chol (cat\u00e9chol) d\u00e9pendent de son r\u00f4le : l\u2019hydroquinone, le r\u00e9sorcinol et le pyrogallol peuvent le remplacer dans certaines applications chimiques ou redox similaires ; l\u2019acide gallique ou l\u2019acide tannique peuvent convenir pour les applications de ch\u00e9lation des m\u00e9taux ; et l\u2019acide ascorbique ou le borohydrure de sodium peuvent parfois se substituer au pyrocat\u00e9chol en tant qu\u2019agents r\u00e9ducteurs. La meilleure alternative d\u00e9pend de l\u2019application sp\u00e9cifique, car ces compos\u00e9s pr\u00e9sentent des r\u00e9activit\u00e9s diff\u00e9rentes.   <\/p>\n<p>Les mesures techniques sont indispensables lorsque la substitution n\u2019est pas possible. Elles comprennent notamment l\u2019utilisation de syst\u00e8mes ferm\u00e9s et l\u2019automatisation, une ventilation par aspiration locale au niveau des points d\u2019\u00e9mission, ainsi qu\u2019une ventilation g\u00e9n\u00e9rale efficace. Ces mesures contribuent \u00e0 r\u00e9duire les concentrations de vapeurs et de poussi\u00e8res en suspension dans l\u2019air.<br \/>\nLes mesures organisationnelles consistent notamment \u00e0 limiter la dur\u00e9e d\u2019exposition, \u00e0 dispenser une formation aux travailleurs (par exemple sur les risques d\u2019exposition cutan\u00e9e), \u00e0 mettre en \u0153uvre des proc\u00e9dures de manipulation s\u00fbres et \u00e0 garantir des m\u00e9thodes de nettoyage appropri\u00e9es qui minimisent la formation de poussi\u00e8re. Une surveillance r\u00e9guli\u00e8re des niveaux d\u2019exposition est recommand\u00e9e.   <\/p>\n<p>Les \u00e9quipements de protection individuelle doivent \u00eatre utilis\u00e9s en dernier recours. Il convient d&rsquo;accorder une attention particuli\u00e8re \u00e0 la pr\u00e9vention du contact avec la peau, en raison de la capacit\u00e9 de la substance \u00e0 \u00eatre absorb\u00e9e par celle-ci.
