In 1993 werd het aantal blootgestelde werknemers voor de EU-15 geschat op 40.000. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Blootstelling aan vinylchloride gebeurt voornamelijk door inademing. Langdurige blootstelling kan lever-, hersen-, bloed- en longkanker veroorzaken.  Vinylchloride is volgens de Verordening Classificatie, labeling en verpakking (CLP) geharmoniseerd ingedeeld als carcinogeen van categorie 1A, wat betekent dat het bij mensen kanker kan veroorzaken.<\/p>\n<h2>Waar komen risico&#8217;s voor?<\/h2>\n<p>De belangrijkste blootstellingsroute aan Vinylchloride op het werk is via inademing, wat vooral voorkomt in fabrieken voor de productie van (poly)vinylchloride (PVC) en in bedrijven waar PVC wordt verwerkt (waaronder verpakking, opslag en hantering van Vinylchloride). Werknemers in de sectoren voor de vervaardiging van industri\u00eble chemicali\u00ebn, kunststofproducten, metaalproducten of machines lopen risico, evenals werknemers die werkzaam zijn in diensten die verband houden met transport en de bouw. <\/p>\n<h2>Meer over de stof<\/h2>\n<p>Vinylchloride is een kleurloos gas dat gemakkelijk brandt. Het heeft een milde, zoete geur, maar de geur is geen adequate waarschuwing voor gevaarlijke concentraties. Het komt niet in de natuur voor en moet industrieel geproduceerd worden voor commerci\u00eble toepassingen. Vinylchloride wordt voornamelijk gebruikt om PVC te maken; PVC wordt gebruikt om een verscheidenheid aan plastic producten te maken, waaronder buizen, draad- en kabelcoatings en verpakkingsmateriaal. Vinylchloride is ook aanwezig in tabaksrook.    <\/p>\n<p>Er geldt een bindende EU-grenswaarde voor beroepsmatige blootstelling van 2,6 mg\/m\u00b3.<\/p>\n<h2>Gevaren die kunnen optreden<\/h2>\n<p>Acute blootstelling aan vinylchloride kan leiden tot symptomen zoals zwakte, duizeligheid, vermoeidheid, gewichtsverlies, gevoelloosheid en tintelingen van de ledematen, visuele stoornissen en in ernstige gevallen coma en de dood. Het kan ook de ogen, huid, slijmvliezen en luchtwegen irriteren. Bij lage blootstellingsniveaus kan het lichaam vinylchloride verwerken en uitscheiden in de urine. Chronische blootstelling kan permanente leverschade en leverkanker, neurologische of gedragssymptomen en veranderingen aan de huid en botten van de hand veroorzaken.   <\/p>\n<p><strong>De latentietijd tussen blootstelling en aan vinylchloride gerelateerde kankers varieert sterk afhankelijk van de verschillende soorten kanker.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Wat u kunt doen<\/h2>\n<p>De meest effectieve manier om blootstelling te voorkomen, is door over te stappen op producten die geen Vinylchloride bevatten of een lager gehalte aan Vinylchloride hebben. Als producten die Vinylchloride bevatten niet kunnen worden vervangen, moet de blootstelling aan Vinylchloride worden beperkt door middel van technische maatregelen, bijvoorbeeld gesloten systemen. Indien dit niet mogelijk is, moeten vonkvrije ventilatiesystemen worden ge\u00efnstalleerd en moeten oogdouches en veiligheidsdouches worden aangebracht indien er gevaar voor contact of spatten bestaat. Voer periodiek representatieve blootstellingsmetingen uit, zodat bekend is wanneer en waar maatregelen moeten worden genomen.     <\/p>\n<p>Maak werknemers voortdurend bewust van de gevolgen van blootstelling en moedig hen aan om vroege symptomen te melden. Geef werknemers bovendien voorlichting over gevaren, veilige werkmethoden en effectieve hygi\u00ebnemaatregelen. Persoonlijke beschermingsmiddelen (PBM) mogen alleen als laatste redmiddel worden gebruikt, nadat de mogelijke technische oplossingen zijn ge\u00efmplementeerd.
