Er zijn geen schattingen beschikbaar van het huidige aantal werknemers dat in de EU wordt blootgesteld aan ortho-tolu\u00efdine (o-Tolu\u00efdine). In 2011 werd, op basis van gegevens uit 2006\/2007, geschat dat 5.500 werknemers werden blootgesteld, waarvan 3.100 werkzaam waren in de vervaardiging van chemicali\u00ebn en chemische producten of in de vervaardiging van rubberproducten. <\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Blootstelling vindt voornamelijk plaats via inademing en opname door de huid; direct huidcontact is niet nodig. Opname via inslikken en contact met de ogen is eveneens mogelijk. <\/p>\n

o-Tolu\u00efdine is krachtens de Classificatie, labeling en verpakking (CLP) ingedeeld als een geharmoniseerde stof in de categorie 1B voor carcinogenen (vermoedelijk carcinogene stof voor de mens, grotendeels gebaseerd op bewijs bij proefdieren). Bij de mens kan o-Tolu\u00efdine blaaskanker veroorzaken. Opname via de huid kan bijdragen aan de totale lichaamsbelasting. <\/p>\n

Waar komen risico’s voor?<\/h2>\n

De blootstelling aan o-Tolu\u00efdine lag in het verleden veel hoger, maar kan ook vandaag de dag nog voorkomen in diverse werkomgevingen, met name in de chemische industrie tijdens de productie, verwerking, bemonstering of overbrenging van o-Tolu\u00efdine of bij het gebruik ervan als tussenproduct, vooral bij de productie van kleurstoffen en bij de vervaardiging van gewasbeschermingsmiddelen. Andere blootstellingssituaties kunnen zich voordoen door vrijkoming uit azokleurstoffen of kleurstoffen die worden gebruikt in textiel, drukinkten, kunststoffen, smeermiddelen en minerale olieproducten; vrijkoming uit additieven tijdens thermische processen zoals vulkanisatie; thermische ontleding van organische bindmiddelen, met name bij gietprocessen; het hanteren of verwarmen van materialen die steenkoolteer bevatten; en laboratorium- en onderzoeksactiviteiten. <\/p>\n

Meer over de stof<\/h2>\n

o-Tolu\u00efdine wordt industrieel vervaardigd door nitratie van Tolueen, wat een mengsel van nitrotolueenen oplevert; het is de belangrijkste van de drie isomere tolu\u00efdines. Het is een kleurloze vloeistof, hoewel commerci\u00eble monsters vaak gelig zijn. o-Tolu\u00efdine is een tussenproduct bij de biologische afbraak van o-nitrotolueen en wordt daarom aangetroffen op voormalige munitielocaties. o-Tolu\u00efdine ontstaat tijdens pyrolyse.
\nEr is geen direct consumentengebruik bekend voor o-tolu\u00efdine, aangezien het op grond van de EU-cosmetica-verordening niet in cosmetica mag worden gebruikt. Het gebruik van azokleurstoffen die bij afbraak o-Tolu\u00efdine vrijgeven, is in de EU niet toegestaan voor textiel en andere consumentenartikelen. De blootstelling van consumenten en het milieu als gevolg van vrijkomende stoffen uit consumentenproducten lijkt dan ook verwaarloosbaar. <\/p>\n

Voor o-Tolu\u00efdine geldt in de hele EU een bindende grenswaarde voor blootstelling op het werk van 0,5 mg\/m\u00b3 in de lucht.<\/p>\n

Gezondheidsrisico\u2019s die kunnen optreden<\/h2>\n

o-Tolu\u00efdine wordt goed opgenomen na inademing en via de huid. Orale blootstelling is op de werkplek niet relevant.
\nEr zijn geen meldingen van effecten na acute blootstelling, maar op basis van gegevens uit dierproeven wordt aangenomen dat er sprake is van een acuut irriterend effect op de ogen en de huid. <\/p>\n

Blaaskanker wordt beschouwd als het relevante gezondheidseffect bij de mens. In sommige lidstaten wordt dit erkend als een beroepsziekte die verband houdt met blootstelling aan o-Tolu\u00efdine in het verleden. <\/p>\n

De latentieperiode tussen blootstelling en het ontstaan van o-Tolu\u00efdine-gerelateerde blaaskanker varieert sterk, maar wordt doorgaans geschat op 15 tot 40 jaar.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Wat u kunt doen<\/h2>\n

Waar mogelijk moet worden overwogen om het middel te vervangen. Om schadelijke gezondheidseffecten te voorkomen, is het van het grootste belang de blootstelling te beperken tot onder de bindende grenswaarde voor beroepsmatige blootstelling of de op gezondheidsgronden vastgestelde grenswaarde. In industri\u00eble processen zijn voorbeelden van technische beheersmaatregelen gesloten systemen, algemene afzuiging en plaatselijke afzuiging. Zelfs bij het werken met gesloten systemen kan blootstelling optreden, bijvoorbeeld tijdens bemonsteringswerkzaamheden of onderhoud. In die gevallen zijn metingen en beheersmaatregelen van belang. Andere aanbevolen werkpraktijken zijn onder meer het verstrekken van informatie over de gevaren en het geven van training aan werknemers, evenals het naleven van algemene normen voor arbeidshygi\u00ebne in ruimtes waar met chemicali\u00ebn wordt gewerkt. Ook werknemers die onderhouds- en schoonmaakwerkzaamheden verrichten, moeten worden getraind. Het wordt aanbevolen om een bedrijfsarts in te schakelen. Houd er rekening mee dat de blootstellingsbeoordeling moet worden ondersteund met biomonitoring, indien van toepassing volgens de nationale wetgeving, omdat o-Tolu\u00efdine goed via de huid wordt opgenomen. Werknemers moeten zich bewust zijn van de effecten van blootstelling. Persoonlijke beschermingsmiddelen mogen alleen als laatste redmiddel worden gebruikt, nadat de mogelijke technische oplossingen zijn ge\u00efmplementeerd. <\/p>\n
