De biocide werd beoordeeld aan de hand van zes parameters: antiseptisch bereik, water\/vetoplosbaarheidsco\u00ebffici\u00ebnt, pH-bereik, stabiliteit\/reactiviteit, toxiciteit en ontvlambaarheid. Een biocide buiten het bereik van de huidige parameters werd niet beschouwd als een geschikt alternatief. Eerst werden de stoffen beoordeeld aan de hand van de technische parameters. De stoffen die voldeden, werden beoordeeld op veiligheidsparameters. Volgens dit proces werden 22 stoffen beoordeeld.    <\/p>\n<p>Het onderzoek concludeerde dat de meeste biociden die in voedingsmiddelen, cosmetica en farmaceutische producten worden gebruikt, niet geschikt worden geacht voor het conserveren van biologische monsters. DMDM-hydanto\u00efne voldoet aan alle 6 parameters, maar DMDM-hydanto\u00efne is nooit voor dit doel gebruikt en daarom is het effect op lange termijn op de integriteit van de monsters niet bekend.
