Trichloorethyleen wordt gebruikt in laboratoria voor kwaliteitscontrole om de hoeveelheid bitumen in asfaltmengsels te bepalen. Bitumen is een gevaarlijke stof waarvan de eliminatie of vervanging door een minder gevaarlijke chemische stof een prioriteit is voor gezondheid en veiligheid. De eliminatie van trichloorethyleen uit het proces wordt uitgevoerd door een kleine moffeloven die het asfaltmengsel verbrandt op de verdampingstemperatuur voor bitumen. Deze procedure vergemakkelijkt de berekening van het bitumenpercentage in het mengsel op basis van het gewichtsverschil.
