Formaldehyde is een organische verbinding die gebruikt wordt als fixeermiddel voor microscopie en histologie. In deze casestudie werd formaldehyde vervangen door een product met ethylalcohol, isopropylalcohol en azijnzuur onder de commerci\u00eble naam Fixall-his. De verbinding werd gekozen vanwege de relatief lage gezondheidsrisico’s en de succesvolle ervaring met vervanging in Franse ziekenhuizen. Het feit dat vervanging al had plaatsgevonden in andere ziekenhuizen is een belangrijke factor bij het overtuigen van de sociale spelers van de validiteit van Fixall-his als vervanging van Formaldehyde als fixeermiddel voor weefselmonsters.
