Als brandweerman of smogduiker ben je van vitaal belang bij het reageren op noodsituaties, het blussen van branden en het waarborgen van de openbare veiligheid. Je werkt meestal in de frontlinie tijdens een brandbestrijdingsoperatie. Hoewel je optimaal beschermd bent door volledige beschermende kleding, ben je in dit beroep toch direct blootgesteld aan de gevaren en is substitutie niet mogelijk. <\/p>\n

Een belangrijk punt van zorg is de mogelijke blootstelling aan gevaarlijke stoffen, bijproducten van de verbranding en giftige stoffen die vrijkomen bij branden. Sommige van deze stoffen kunnen kankerverwekkend zijn en langdurige blootstelling kan het risico op het ontwikkelen van kanker na verloop van tijd verhogen. Om dit risico tot een minimum te beperken, is het noodzakelijk om de juiste ademhalingsbescherming te dragen, de juiste en volledig aangetrokken uitrusting te dragen tijdens brandbestrijdingsoperaties en zich te houden aan de veiligheidsnormen tijdens brandbestrijding, zodat het directe contact met deze schadelijke materialen tot een minimum wordt beperkt. Dit omvat ook het zo snel mogelijk ontsmetten van besmette lichaamsdelen met zeep en penetrantvrije producten. <\/p>\n

Door prioriteit te geven aan veiligheidsmaatregelen, beschermende uitrusting te gebruiken en zich strikt te houden aan de richtlijnen van de sector, kunnen brandweerlieden de potenti\u00eble kankerverwekkende risico’s van hun beroep aanzienlijk beperken.
