Como pode penetrar na pele, tanto a inala\u00e7\u00e3o como o contacto d\u00e9rmico s\u00e3o vias de exposi\u00e7\u00e3o relevantes.<br \/>\nA subst\u00e2ncia est\u00e1 classificada ao abrigo do Regulamento CRE da UE como suspeita de ser agente cancer\u00edgeno para o ser humano (Categoria 1B). <\/p>\n<h2>Onde ocorrem os riscos<\/h2>\n<p>A exposi\u00e7\u00e3o profissional ao pirocatecol ocorre principalmente na ind\u00fastria qu\u00edmica e farmac\u00eautica, em atividades de ensaios e an\u00e1lises t\u00e9cnicas e em algumas ind\u00fastrias a jusante, como o tratamento de superf\u00edcies, a eletr\u00f3nica, a ind\u00fastria da borracha e dos pl\u00e1sticos e a produ\u00e7\u00e3o de m\u00e1quinas.<br \/>\nOs profissionais com maior risco de exposi\u00e7\u00e3o ao pirocatecol incluem operadores de processo, operadores de destila\u00e7\u00e3o, mistura e operadores de parques de tanques, bem como trabalhadores da manuten\u00e7\u00e3o, t\u00e9cnicos de laborat\u00f3rio e qu\u00edmicos anal\u00edticos. Os trabalhadores de galvanoplastia e os que est\u00e3o envolvidos no tratamento de superf\u00edcies e no fabrico de produtos eletr\u00f3nicos tamb\u00e9m podem ficar expostos.<br \/>\nA exposi\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 mais prov\u00e1vel durante atividades em que a subst\u00e2ncia \u00e9 manuseada em sistemas abertos ou onde a conten\u00e7\u00e3o n\u00e3o \u00e9 totalmente eficaz, como em tarefas de mistura ou combina\u00e7\u00e3o, em imers\u00e3o, revestimento ou em processos de tratamento de superf\u00edcies. Pode ocorrer exposi\u00e7\u00e3o adicional durante opera\u00e7\u00f5es de manuten\u00e7\u00e3o e limpeza.  <\/p>\n<h2>Mais informa\u00e7\u00f5es sobre a subst\u00e2ncia<\/h2>\n<p>O pirocatecol \u00e9 uma subst\u00e2ncia s\u00f3lida \u00e0 temperatura ambiente, apresentando-se normalmente como um s\u00f3lido cristalino de cor branca a castanha, que pode escurecer quando exposto ao ar. O pirocatecol dissolve-se muito bem na \u00e1gua e em muitos solventes org\u00e2nicos. <\/p>\n<p>O pirocatecol n\u00e3o \u00e9 altamente inflam\u00e1vel nem explosivo em condi\u00e7\u00f5es normais. No entanto, pode formar poeira quando manuseado na forma s\u00f3lida e pode gerar aeross\u00f3is ou vapores quando aquecido durante processos industriais ou quando utilizado na forma l\u00edquida. <\/p>\n<p>\u00c9 usado principalmente como intermedi\u00e1rio na fabrica\u00e7\u00e3o de outras subst\u00e2ncias e produtos. As principais categorias de produtos finais para o pirocatecol incluem agroqu\u00edmicos (produtos fitossanit\u00e1rios), aromas e fragr\u00e2ncias (por exemplo, vanilina, produtos perfumados para o lar), produtos farmac\u00eauticos e aditivos de borracha\/pol\u00edmeros para pl\u00e1sticos, pneus e artigos de borracha. <\/p>\n<h2>Riscos para a sa\u00fade que podem surgir<\/h2>\n<p>A exposi\u00e7\u00e3o ao pirocatecol pode ocorrer por inala\u00e7\u00e3o de poeira ou vapores e por contacto com a pele.<br \/>\nA exposi\u00e7\u00e3o a curto prazo pode causar sintomas como tosse, irrita\u00e7\u00e3o na garganta, irrita\u00e7\u00e3o nos olhos e vermelhid\u00e3o ou desconforto na pele. Exposi\u00e7\u00f5es muito elevadas (por exemplo, em caso de ingest\u00e3o) podem resultar em efeitos t\u00f3xicos mais graves. Tamb\u00e9m pode causar rea\u00e7\u00f5es al\u00e9rgicas na pele ap\u00f3s exposi\u00e7\u00e3o repetida.<br \/>\nLong-term exposure can cause more serious health effects, including an increased risk of cancer, skin depigmentation, chronic dermatitis, and respiratory effects.  <\/p>\n<h2>O que podes fazer<\/h2>\n<p>A substitui\u00e7\u00e3o deve ser considerada a prioridade. Sempre que poss\u00edvel, o pirocatecol deve ser substitu\u00eddo por subst\u00e2ncias menos perigosas ou por processos alternativos que reduzam a exposi\u00e7\u00e3o. Os poss\u00edveis substitutos do pirocatecol (catecol) dependem da sua fun\u00e7\u00e3o: a hidroquinona, o resorcinol e o pirogallol podem substitu\u00ed-lo em algumas aplica\u00e7\u00f5es qu\u00edmicas ou redox semelhantes; o \u00e1cido g\u00e1lico ou o \u00e1cido t\u00e2nico podem funcionar para aplica\u00e7\u00f5es de quela\u00e7\u00e3o de metais; e o \u00e1cido asc\u00f3rbico ou o borohidreto de s\u00f3dio podem, por vezes, substituir o pirocatecol como agentes redutores. A melhor alternativa depende da aplica\u00e7\u00e3o espec\u00edfica, uma vez que estes compostos t\u00eam reatividades diferentes.   <\/p>\n<p>As medidas de controlo de engenharia s\u00e3o essenciais quando a substitui\u00e7\u00e3o n\u00e3o \u00e9 poss\u00edvel. Estas incluem a utiliza\u00e7\u00e3o de sistemas fechados e automa\u00e7\u00e3o, ventila\u00e7\u00e3o por exaust\u00e3o local nos pontos de emiss\u00e3o e ventila\u00e7\u00e3o geral eficaz. Estas medidas ajudam a reduzir as concentra\u00e7\u00f5es de vapores e poeiras no ar.<br \/>\nAs medidas organizacionais incluem limitar a dura\u00e7\u00e3o da exposi\u00e7\u00e3o, dar forma\u00e7\u00e3o aos trabalhadores (por exemplo, sobre os riscos de exposi\u00e7\u00e3o cut\u00e2nea), implementar procedimentos de manuseamento seguros e garantir m\u00e9todos de limpeza adequados que minimizem a gera\u00e7\u00e3o de poeira. Recomenda-se a monitoriza\u00e7\u00e3o regular dos n\u00edveis de exposi\u00e7\u00e3o.   <\/p>\n<p>O equipamento de prote\u00e7\u00e3o individual deve ser usado como \u00faltima linha de defesa. Deve dar-se especial aten\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e0 preven\u00e7\u00e3o do contacto com a pele, devido \u00e0 capacidade da subst\u00e2ncia ser absorvida pela pele.
