Philips Healthcare have found that lithium ion batteries are an alternative to those based on nickel and cadmium (NiCd).

Medical equipment, such as portable defibrillators, is still permitted under EU legislation to use NiCd batteries, although manufacturers of more recent devices have already transitioned to lithium-based alternatives.
