Trade union campaign in Belgium to prevent occupational cancers

Belgium Statistics – Work Related Cancer

In Belgium, around 1,800 people die every year from work-related cancer. This figure, which is largely underestimated, illustrates an alarming reality that receives little media coverage. By way of comparison, this is far more than the number of deaths caused by road accidents (500 per year) or feminicide (25 per year).

On a European scale, 100,000 lives are snuffed out every year, equivalent to the population of a town like Mons in Belgium. These deaths are 20 to 30 times more numerous than those caused by accidents at work.

A New Central Focus

Faced with this major challenge, Form’action André Renard (the centre for training, publications, audiovisual productions and expertise of the Belgian trade union FGTB) has made this issue a central focus of its work for many years. To this end, they have produced a series of 22 audiovisual clips with specialists (occupational physicians, prevention consultants, trade union experts). These clips in French, designed to raise awareness and provide information, are now available online: www.stopcancersprofessionnels.be
