Fitters are skilled tradespeople responsible for assembling, installing, and maintaining machinery, equipment, and structures. Their work is critical in various industries, including manufacturing, construction, utilities, and more. Fitters face several occupational hazards due to the nature of their work, which often involves heavy machinery, high temperatures, and hazardous materials for example during welding processes.
Possible exposure to hazardous materials include asbestos when working in older buildings and dusts and fumes from welding, cutting and machining processes. Ensure good ventilation and install local exhaust ventilation, if possible. Ensuring all tools and equipment are well-maintained and safe to use. Strict adherence to safety guidelines and protocols, including lockout/tagout procedures.
Regular training on safe work practices and hazard recognition. Use of gloves, helmets, safety glasses and respiratory protection equipment (RPE) might be required.
