A waste collector, also known as a garbage man, garbage collector, trashman, binman or dustman, is a person employed by a public or private enterprise to collect and dispose of solid waste (refuse) and recycables from residential, commercial, industrial or other collection sites for further processing and waste disposal. Hazards associated with waste-collection include increased exposure to chemical hazards associated with diesel engine exhaust (DEE), heavy metals, volatile organic compounds, and dust.
To mitigate these risks, waste collectors should prioritise safety measures and adhere to best practices in their work environment. This includes utilising proper ventilation systems whenever feasible and following established safety protocols to help reduce exposure to harmful substances in the workplace. Wearing appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE), such as gloves and masks, when handling chemicals and materials that may pose health risks.
